Douwe Blumberg’s public artwork was created for Side Creek Park and designed to be placed so that the sculptural groupings meander through the park connecting the various sections visually. The placement of the artwork is meant for the park users to have a close‐up view but it is still visible at a distance from South Dunkirk Street.
The cast aluminum sculptures depict several flights of over‐sized, stylized hawks designed to evoke the beauty, freedom, and drama of the area’s natural fliers. In searching the soaring predators of the area, the artist was looking for the bird with the longest and most sculptural wings and tail. while these sculptures are not intended to be accurate portrayals of specific species, their outline is meant to portray the Marsh Hawk, the Ferruginous Hawk, or the Red‐tailed Hawk.
9 sculptures placed throughout the park
