Walter’s is part of the Shrine Mountain Inn cabin system. This two-level cabin sleeps 12, six on each floor. It features running water, showers, flush toilets, generator power & lighting, and two kitchens. The cabin is heated by wood-burning furnaces, and stocked with tons of dry wood. There are several bunk beds with comfy mattresses (by back country standards). Bring your own sleeping beds, or bedding can be rented.
The Shrine Mountain Inns are by far the most accessible of the 10th Mountain Division Hut System. These cabins are just 2 3/4 miles from the top of Vail Pass, just far enough to get away from the noise of I-70. The trail is non-mechanized, so you don’t have to worry about slednecks running you over.
During the wintertime the best skiing is SE of the cabins in Black Lake Glades. The battle-hardened adventurous sort can take a crack at the 16 1/4 mile Commando Run from Shrine Mountain Pass to Vail Ski Resort used for training by the 10th Mountain Division soldiers in the 1940’s.
One of the easiest cabins to get to, and lush amenities.
2 3/4 miles from Vail Pass.
