Janet’s Hut is one of the more easily accessed huts in the 10th Mountain Hut System. Located just west of Copper Mountain Ski Resort, Janet’s features fun low-angle bowls for the novice skier. Thrill-seekers can take the short hike to nearby Sugarloaf Peak or Searle Pass for some steeper terrain. There is some gladded skiing below the cabin, but the trees get real thick real fast. Janet’s also serves as a great jump-off point for a cabin tour to nearby Shrine Mountain Inn, Fowler Hut, Hillard Hut, and Jackal Hut.
The cabin, completed in 1990, sleeps 20 people in four bedrooms. It features a wood-burning heater, two propane stoves, solar-powered lighting, and a nice southern-facing deck. If you show your 10th Mountain confirmation letter at the Copper Mountain ticket office you can get a free one-ride lift ticket and knock off most of the elevation gain on the Guller Creek trail approach.
Easternmost hut in 10th-Mountain System, easy hike
Ride the K & L lifts from Copper and go to the gate on West Tenmile trail. Follow the Guller Creek trail from here (4 3/4 mi). A more interesting approach is from Vail Pass via Upper Stafford Creek (5 3/4 mi). The shortest, however most difficult approach is from the top of Union Peak on Copper over Jacque Peak along a high ridge-line (4 mi).
