Built in 1988, Fowler / Hilliard hut is named in memorial for Denver residents Ann Fowler and Ed Hilliard, who were tragically killed in a climbing accident on North Maroon Peak. This hut is nestled above treeline a half-mile from the top of Resolution Mountain between Red Cliff and Vail Pass. Fowler / Hilliard sleeps 16 in comfortable bunk beds and mattresses upstairs, with spacious common areas and kitchen downstairs. The hut has lighting powered by solar panels, propane stoves, fully stocked kitchen, and fantastic views to the South of Resloution Creek, and Shrine Mountain to the North.
Fowler / Hilliard is managed by the Tenth Mountain Hut Association. There is not motorized access to the hut, and pets are not allowed for sanitary reasons.
Fowler / Hilliard makes a great stop for hut-to-hut trips with connections to Jackal hut, Shrine Mountain Inn, and Janet’s Cabin. However, I suggest staying for a couple nights to enjoy the fantastic skiing in Resolution Bowl just above the cabin. There’s just too much wide-open terrain here to not find fresh tracks every time, even weeks after a storm. The W, S, and Eastern faces of Ptarmigan Hill also make for some mellow, sweeping turns.
Roomy and very secluded, it is easy to forget the rest of the world here. Fantastic base skiing, good “stopover” point for hut-to-hut trips.
