The Famous Red and White cliffs that can be seen when crossing the river Severn contain a highly productive bone bearing bed at the very top from the Rhaetian Penarth series. This bed is full of teeth, reptile, fish and dinosaur remains.
Aust cliff can be accessed from the A403, if traveling from the South of Aust, take the turning directly after crossing the ‘Avon’ River. There is a series of roundabouts, but follow the A403 to Aust. Continue for quite a while until you reach a sign for a very large roundabout. This roundabout will point to the M48 (Wales, across the old bridge), or M48 East. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THEM, just before the roundabout is a lane to the left of the Duel Carriageway, take this lane and follow it all the way round. It will lead to a very straight road next to the river, park along this road and walk North (towards the Old Bridge), a public footpath will lead directly onto the beach. If you miss the turnoff, go all the way round the roundabout, stay in the right hand lane, and you can cross the carriageway to access the lane. There is another exit before you reach the Roundabout, but this is easy to find if you haven’t been before. To leave, simply follow the straight road down and it will lead onto the A403 in which you can remember for another time!
