Features

This is the location where Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was filmed for the scene in which Jabba the Hut attempts to kill Luke and Han by tossing them into the mouth of a sand creature called, “Sarlacc.” The creature lies underneath the Great Pit of Carkoon.

The site was filmed in the Imperial Sand Dunes in California, about 20 miles west of Yuma, AZ. The set was built in the summer of 1982, when few people brave the scorching heat of the sand dunes. All of the shrubs that surrounded the set were cut down (they grew back later) to give the appearance of the desolate landscape depicted in the movie.

The site in which this is filmed is next to a popular hill called ‘Competition Hill’, where drag races with dune buggy’s and ATV’s take place.
