Description

For about 20 years, this was the anonymous location of George Lucas’ Lucasfilm Ltd — including Industrial Light & Magic.

Primarily spanning four unlabeled buildings (Signage read “Kerner Optical Company”) along Kerner Blvd (known as A, B, C and D buildings), this was where the Star Wars movies were made, and countless other films produced, before Skywalker Ranch was completed in the late 1980s. After that, ILM remained here until it moved to the Presidio in San Francisco in 2006.

When ILM left The Kerner Campus, the physical effects and camera engineering departments were spun off in a new business that took the name “Kerner Optical” as a nod to Lucas’ use of the name during his time at the property. Kerner continues to provide outstanding special effects and, now, 3D technologies to the movie business.

In mid-2009 Kerner was purchased by entrepreneur Eric Edmeades and still has its headquarters in the original Kerner Campus.
