This is the location of the controversial and often copied cover art for the 11th Beatles album – Abbey Road. The crossing is just outside of Abbey Road Studios where the album was being recorded.

There was a strong rumor circulating at the time that Paul McCartney was dead. The short story is that Paul stormed out of a recording session and sped off in his car. While eying a cute meter maid (Lovely Rita), Paul got into a head-on collision and was decapitated (others say he broke his back). The band didn’t want to stymie their success, so they replaced Paul with look-alike Billy Shears. In order to stave off the wrath of Paul’s ghost the Fab Four placed hints in most of their albums that Paul was dead.

Several symbols in this photo apparently support this claim. John is dressed like a priest, Ringo like a pallbearer, Paul as himself, and George as a gravedigger. Paul isn’t wearing shoes (a symbol of death in Greece), and is holding his cigarette in his right hand (Paul’s a lefty). The license plate on the back of the white VW beetle is 28IF – Paul would have been 28 IF he was alive.

On the back of the album there is a woman walking down the street – this is believed to be Lovely Rita. To the right of the Beatles sign there is a shadowy figure that resembles a skull. To the left of the Beatles sign if you connect the dots it spells a “3” – the number of band members remaining. Finally, there is a crack in the wall through the Beatles sign, representing the breakup of the band.
