When JD Salinger published Catcher in the Rye in 1951, he lived here for about a year before moving to New Hampshire.
Salinger, (January 1, 1919-January 27, 2010), was born and raised in Manhattan. He was the son of Sol and Miriam Salinger. Salinger attended schools in New York as a child, he returned to the city as an adult after attending a military academy in Pennsylvania, working in Europe and serving in WWII.
After the war, Salinger lived with his parents and published stories in the New Yorker. When Catcher in the Rye was published, it was met with curiosity that grew into intense popularity. It was during this time Salinger himself began to withdraw from the public eye.
Salinger published his last original work in 1955.
JD Salinger fiercely defended his privacy and was well known for declining interviews and even Samuel Goldwyn once for the movie rights to Catcher in the Rye
